Solid surface countertops are made by blending
acrylic polymers (plastic) and stone-derived materials, which
are then poured into molds to create half-inch-thick sheets.
Color choices in the past were limited to some
pretty boring earth tones, but many new patterns are designs
Solid Surface is a durable kitchen counter
surface that has some unique qualities. It is softer then
granite or quartz which means it can scratch or dent if struck.
That softness however lowers the chance of breaking glasses
or other items that may impact the surface.
It is not very resistant to heat so you
cannot put hot pots or pans on the surface
Solid Surface countertops are generally
priced between $70 - $100 per square foot.
Solid surface are fairly easy to maintan
and require no annual sealing.
Standard solid surface counterops are generall
not very green. However some manufacturers offer the product
with recycled content.
The most popular manufacturer of solid
surface countertops is Corian® from DuPont. The
product is avialable through a number of dealers in Toronto,
Ottawa, Montreal, Winnipeg, Calgary and all other metro cities.
It can also be found in most smaller cities in Canada.
